The Academy is keen to develop international links with other schools around the world and currently has links with schools in Kenya. These schools are situated in the town of Mombasa - the New Daystar Primary School is in the VOK Village whilst the Hill Wheeler Preparatory School can be found in Mtwapa Town in the Village of Mikanjuni. Through our Friends of Unity and with the support of our staff, Govenors and business partnerships, we have raised funds to help support vulnerable children whose parents are unable to pay the necessary school fees to allow them to attend school. For the New Daystar Primary School we have provided financial support so that they can build a block of 6 toilets where previously there was only 1 toilet for 250 children and the staff. The Academy has shared its literacy resources with both schools to support them with their aim of raising literacy standards for all students.
We are currently working with the Hill Wheeler Preparatory School to submit a bid for a teacher exchange visit and many of our students are interested in visiting Kenya to find out what life is like first-hand.
Our students have been exchanging letters with students in both schools and we are encouraging this line of communication as it helps our students to develop their handwriting skills which, in this day of modern technology, is a skill which is in danger of being lost. Replies from students in Kenya can be seen below.
