1. Academy Nursing Sister
It is important that we are aware of any health problems your child may have. The Nurse may have to develop a health care plan for your child, which is held in the strictest confidence. Parents wishing to discuss student health matters with the Nurse are welcome to do so by attending the drop-in sessions. Alternatively parents may telephone the Academy to make an appointment or speak to the Progress Managers.
2. First Aid
The Academy has a fully equipped medical room which is staffed by qualified First Aiders. We provide a First Aid service for minor injuries occurring during Academy hours. Parents will be contacted should students require further medical treatment or hospital attention as parental consent must be obtained before such treatment can be given.
3. Asthma Policy
Unity encourages students with asthma to participate in all Academy activities.
Prior to students joining the Academy, parents will be asked to declare if the child has asthma and a record of this will be kept by the Academy Nursing Sister.
Parents are urged to provide the Academy with details of treatment and a spare inhaler to be kept at the Academy and used in the event of an emergency. This is in addition to ensuring that their child has an inhaler with them at all times.
4. Health Education
Health Education will be addressed through the Curriculum and Tutorial Programme.
5. Health Screening
At present health screening will take place for those students in year 7. This will consist of monitoring their height, weight and vision. General health advice will be given as necessary. Parents wishing to exclude their child from this programme should state this in writing.
6. Vaccinations
The School Health Team attends Unity City Academy for the vaccination programme as follows:
Year 7 - TB injection
Year 10 - Tetanus, polio and diphtheria injection
Parents will be issued with letters and consent forms well in advance.
7. Addresses
Parents are advised that student address details may be released to the Health Authority. Please contact the Academy if you have any objection to this policy.
8. Emergency Procedure (illness)
Students who become unwell at the Academy will be sent or taken to the Medical Room to be seen by a qualified First Aider. If it is considered necessary, we will, if possible, contact parents. In an emergency, the Academy will ensure that the child is taken to hospital and Academy Reception will endeavour to contact the parent to advise them of the action which has been taken.
